Very disappointed.
I love indian food, and frequently visit another restaurant, but I decided to give this one a try. I don't normally judge places on one experience, but this one was so poor I am hesitant to go again.
I ordered the Chicken Madras because I had heard good things about it, and I like spicy food. The food came in good time, which I was very impressed with, but I was turned off the minute I tasted it. The meal was VERY oily. The chicken pieces were more fat than actual meat. The food was grainy (which I was not expecting) and was NOT spicy at all. It was very tasteless except for the taste of oil. I could not finish even half the meal because I felt sick. I have eaten at many different indian restaurants, and have never tasted anything like that.
Perhaps I just have high expectations because of the other places I go to which are quite good, but I must admit I was very turned off by the food there. I will not be going back.
We have been to this restaurant many times and the food is consistently very good. This is likely one of the best Indian restaurants in the city. If you are in the Glebe, hungry, and in the mood for Indian, this should be your stop.
Firstly, all of the food listed above was not ordered at one time; this is a consolidated review that covers the many tens of times we have enjoyed the food at Taj Mahal. Here is quick run-down on the items:
xcellent/Must Try: Lamb Vindaloo (very spicy), Prawn Balchow (very spicy), Lamb Madras (very spicy), Lamb Passanda (excellent and mild), Tandoori Salmon (nice change from chicked), Tandoori Pomfret
Very Good/Worth Trying: Dahl Mahkni, Saag Paneer, Onion Bhaji, Onion Naan (tasty but a bit spicy)
OK: Butter Chicken, Lamb Bhoona
Standard Fare: Naan, Pulloa Rice
Oh, and they have a local delivery service!

Watch out --- the madras chicken is spicy!!! All the dishes were tasty, they were generous with a fair amount of big shrimp and nice tasking lamb. We did laugh as we managed to finish the madras chicken with a little helping of raita (cucumber yogurt) to cool our mouths down.
