It’s Edmonton in 1979 and Lynne Holland and Diane Gibbs, the original owners of Kid’s Stuff Etc/My Favorite Aunt’s consignment clothing store, have bundles of clothes that their young kids have outgrown. The clothes are in great shape and they wouldn’t think of throwing them out, but there’s no local consignment store to take them. Not one to sit back and wait for a solution to present itself, the two friends hatch a plan to open Edmonton’s first children’s consignment store: Kid’s Stuff Etc.
Larissa Love and Holly Hawryshuk took over the reins of the business when their mothers retired in 2006. “In 1979,” Larissa says, “the economy wasn’t as good as it is now, of course. And there was no children’s consignment store in the area...my mom had all of these clothes but no one that she could hand them down to – that’s how she got the idea to open the store. It was a great way for people to profit from clothes that are in good condition and also buy new stuff at a great price.”
